Abstract
Adair Turner’s lecture will explore the changing nature of economic activity in a world which is simultaneously ‘high-tech’ and ‘hi-touch’, and will support the need for major policy changes to ensure that capitalism can deliver enhanced human welfare. The tide is meant to raise all boats, ensuring growth delivers increased human welfare. And technological progress – particularly in information and communication technology – continues to surge ahead. But the assumption that free markets will deliver increased human welfare is challenged by increasing inequality: and technological progress may exacerbate that trend.
