Abstract
We expect any reasonable theory to have group velocities smaller than one. Any theory violating this condition should, at the very least, be heavily scrutinized, if not outright rejected. Yet, such superluminal Effective Field Theories (EFTs) are of current research interest, ranging from the speculative (massive GR/DGP/Galileons) to the foundational (QED). In this talk I will discuss how these effects arise in different scenarios and analyze their consequences from an EFT perspective, demonstrating how their phenomenology can qualitatively differ. As a bonus, some fascinating black hole physics will be encountered along the way.
