Abstract
The year 1881 is a remarkable one in German commercial history. It is the foundation date of half a dozen small provincial and seemingly unconnected haberdashery stores, that would flourish within less than a decade to become the leading retailers of the German Empire. Within a single generation a group of extraordinary Jewish entrepreneurs turned from hawkers into the celebrated captains of the town’s chambers of commerce. While their pioneering fathers and mothers, who had weathered many crisis and war, passed out of their businesses in the 1920s secure in the knowledge that the family business would prevail, seismic shifts in the economy brought an enormous challenge to their children.
