Abstract
Welcome to Future Debates, a series of public events supported by the British Science Association.
How are recent advances in genomics transforming personalised healthcare?
What systems do we need to handle such big data?
Do we really want to know the deepest secrets of our genome, and how is such knowledge protected
Should insurance policies take into account an individual's disease risk as estimated from genomics studies?
These and other aspects of genome data privacy will be covered at the CBSA ’s question-style debate “The Secrets of Your Genome”.
The panel includes:
Dr Robert Semple is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow and Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at the University of Cambridge.
Dr Carolina Haefliger, MD, is the Head of the Companion Diagnostic Unit for Cardiovascular and Metabolism at AstraZeneca, based in Sweden.
Sam Smith is from medConfidential, an independent non‐partisan organisation campaigning for confidentiality and consent in health and social care.
Nick Meade is Director of Policy at Genetic Alliance, leading the organisation’s policy on research, healthcare services, genomic technologies, and more.
Doors open from 5.50pm, with the debate to run from 6pm until 7.30pm. This event is suitable for 16+ and the option of continued discussion afterwards in The Great Expectations next door is open to all.
Future Debates events are part of the British Science Association’s work to make science a fundamental part of British society and culture. We want to empower many more people – not just scientists – to constructively engage in debates over the applications and implications of science in their lives, their local economy and the UK’s future.
