Abstract
POLIS , in collaboration with the Von HΓΌgel Institute and the Cambridge Migration Research Network, cordially invites you to a two-day workshop European Migration and Refugee Crisis: Contested Politics of Social Integration and Identity on Thu 23rd June 3.45pm to 6.30pm, and Fri 24th June 9am to 5.30pm.
Place: Garden Room, St Edmund’s College, Mount Pleasant, Cambridge (Thursday), and POLIS , ARB, Cambridge (Friday)
The workshop will discuss refugee and migration politics with focus on identity, politics, religion, nation, racism, political attitudes and gender in the framework of European national policies. The workshop starts from the assumption that the worldwide refugee crisis signifies a historical watershed; it concerns European identity and politics in a new way. The EU member countries are divided by disagreement upon migration and refugee politics, whether in political, economic, social or moral terms. This raises the question of how the recent developments, debates and reactions in Europe can be understood. The aim of the workshop is to carve out key characteristic and conditions of this problem, and to identify central areas of necessary research with regard to the politics of integration and identity. The programme also features discussion about the links between the UK referendum on EU membership and migration issues and refugee crisis. The workshop is open to the public. However, as places are limited for Friday, registration is necessary. Please confirm your attendance with Vlado Kmec vk287@cam.ac.uk by June 16. [For Friday only; no registration required for Thursday].
The workshop is supported by the DAAD Cambridge Research Hub with funds from the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO).
