Abstract
The flow between concentric cylinders shows a large number of different states in the transition from laminar to turbulent that have triggered many developments in bifurcation theory, pattern formation, and amplitude equations. It is only in recent years that it has been realized that this variety of flow states also persists into the turbulent parameter regions. I will survey our contributions on the occurrence of a torque maxima and a non-steady bursting form of turbulence, on the interplay between rotation and shear, and on the transition to rotating plane Couette flow when the radius ratio approaches 1.
I will also discuss the more general questions about the properties of boundary layers that that can be deduced from the observations in the Taylor-Couette system.
