Atmospheric sensing using ultra-sensitive spectroscopy

Abstract
Cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS) is an ultra-sensitive spectroscopic technique now used widely in the laboratory. However, the evolution of laboratory based equipment to function in the field environment presents many formidable challenges. In this presentation the principles of CRDS will be outlined. Variants of CRDS - broad band CRDS and cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS), both representing important evolutionary steps towards ultra sensitive and portable field instruments, will be described.
