'Remembering the Gold Era: the hidden heritage of Central Otago’s gold rush'
- 👤 Speaker: Dr Lloyd Carpenter, Visiting Fellow, Wolfson College and Lecturer in Māori Studies, Lincoln University, New Zealand

- 📍 Venue: Combination Room, Wolfson College
Abstract
When gold was found in Otago’s sparsely-settled interior in 1862, it profoundly transformed the region’s landscape, population and economy. The mythologised heritage and culture of the rush remains at the heart of Central Otago identity, especially for tourist consumption. I argue that the real heritage of Otago’s gold era is more interesting and challenging than simplistic modern mythopoeia.
