Abstract
The recognition that the promotion of physical activity has one of the greatest potentials to achieve gains in health in older age highlights the importance of musculoskeletal fitness. However tendons, a key component of the musculoskeletal system, are particularly susceptible to age-related tendon dysfunction and disease. Our research has focused on understanding the mechanisms of age-related functional decline in tendon. This presentation will cover age-related changes to the mechanical properties of tendon and tendon sub-structures, changes to cell metabolism and the formation of advanced glycation end-product (AGE) crosslinks within the extracellular matrix of tendon.
