Abstract
In healthcare, patient safety has received substantial attention and, in turn, some safety approaches have been adopted from other high-risk industries. One of these has been the use of risk assessment, predominantly by using risk matrices. However, whilst other industries have criticised the design and use of these risk matrices, the applicability of such criticism has not been investigated formally in healthcare.
This talk will focus on the currently used risk matrices in acute trusts in NHS England, and then discuss the applicability of criticisms of risk matrices from outside healthcare. Lastly, a number of recommendations will be given for their current use.
Series This talk is part of the Engineering Design Centre Seminars series.
