Global modelling of tropospheric halogens and their impacts on air quality and climate

Abstract
Halogens have established impacts on the air we breathe in the troposphere, but our models of air-quality and climate models do not consider them. Known impacts of halogens include destruction of ozone, a key climate and air-quality gas, and perturbation of HOx (OH+HO2) and NOx (NO+NO2) families. Over the past few years many new observations and new tropospheric halogen sources have been reported. This talk will describe the development of a global halogen simulation within the GEOS -Chem global chemical transport model (www.geos-chem.org) and explore the impacts on air-quality and climate. First the significant gas-phase impacts on tropospheric composition in present day are explored, then implications for pre-industrial ozone and modelled aerosol-phase iodine will be discussed.
