Abstract
Take a finite number of strings (e.g. locks of hair) affixed to an immobile object (e.g. a head) and start crossing them over and under each other in various patterns. What do you get? A braid! Who cares? Mathematicians! Iโll tell you what braids have to do with complex polynomials and how you can use them to construct new 3-dimensional spaces from old.
