Abstract
For centuries, memorisation and recitation were vital modes through which poems were experienced. Mixed reactions to their reinstatement on the UK school curriculum indicate how much has changed. But does memorisation have any value? The findings of the Poetry and Memory Project offer some fascinating answers to this question â as well as revealing which poems the UK has at its heart.
