The role of attachment in cults and radicalization

Attachment theory is a useful lens by which to understand the complex conversion processes experienced by followers of cults and extremist groups. The mechanisms and effects of disorganized attachment can help explain the leadership, structure, ideologies and coercive control (or brainwashing) processes that characterize such groups. The emotional and cognitive effects of these isolating and highly controlling relationships will be discussed. This talk will also suggest that there is an urgent need to develop a public health approach for prevention of the related problems of cult recruitment and radicalization.
