This is an informal summer seminar on a topic of general interest

“Let us recall that formerly, and at no remote epoch, an unusual rain or an extreme drought […] were all regarded as signs of celestial wrath. Heaven was invoked to avert their baneful influence. As these phenomena, occurring and disappearing at long intervals, seemed to oppose the order of nature it was supposed that Heaven, irritated by the crimes of earth, had created them to announce its vengeance.”—- Pierre Simon Laplace Today, these same phenomena are attributed, in part, to global warming, and costly schemes are proposed to counter them. Are these schemes better justified than the prayers of bygone centuries? We cast an eye over the evidence.
