Abstract
Plasmodesmata are channels between cells which provide a pathway for exchange of macromolecules involved in development, metabolism, defense. Plant viruses have been used as tools to understand the mechanisms available for cell-to-cell movement of macromolecules between cells. Toward this research, our laboratory uses Potato virus X which encodes three proteins to enable viral cell-to-cell movement. Two of these proteins interact with the ER and one protein is a silencing suppressor. Our recent investigations have shown that the ER plays an important role in virus cell-to-cell movement. ER stress is also triggered by virus infection and seems to be a factor modulating accumulation of viral movement proteins.
