Abstract
In my talk I will discuss the brane realisation of the geometrical concept of “transverse slicing”. I will consider a family of brane systems in Type IIB superstring theory that preserve 8 supercharges. The low energy dynamics of these branes are described by a 3d N=4 quantum field theory. The moduli space of the quantum field theory is the union of two hyperkähler cones. “Slicing” one of the cones corresponds to performing the Higgs mechanism in the quantum field theory. This has a natural description in terms of motions of branes in the string theory system. I will try to illustrate this process and use it to recover the characterisation of nilpotent orbits of classical Lie algebras given by Kraft and Procesi in the 80’s.
