Abstract
Lovelock and Horndeski theories are natural generalisations of Einstein’s theory of relativity with second order equations of motion. Although some aspects of these theories have been vastly discussed in the physics literature, the question of their mathematical consistency has received little attention. In particular, it is not known whether they admit a well-posed initial value problem, a necessary requirement for them to be considered viable alternatives to General Relativity. In this talk, I will discuss some recent results regarding the well-posedness of Cauchy problem for these theories.
