Original Abstract: This paper advances a general theory of technological objects that attempts to (1) do justice to both their physical and social aspects, and (2) facilitate a realist account of their fit within the social world. The theory is demonstrated by using it to unpack some novel aspects of user-driven product innovation, as illustrated by the appropriation of the gramophone turntable as a musical instrument in hip-hop music and subsequent innovations in digital music players.

The format of discussion will be a brief invited introduction/critique by two members of the group, followed by general discussion and informal mixing.
