Abstract
I’m going to talk about convergence to equilibrium measured in relative entropy. I will discuss how to show convergence in relative entropy for some simple equations found in kinetic theory. I will briefly discuss the standard methods for proving convergence in relative entropy and also what happens when you introduce spatial inhomogeneity by adding a transport term. The problem of showing convergence to equilibrium for spatially inhomogeneous kinetic equations led Villani and others to introduce the theory of hypocoercivity. Hopefully, I will try and explain the problem that hypocoercivity seeks to solve and how to show convergence to equilibrium in some of these cases.
