Generic long-range interactions between bodies in an active fluid

Abstract
It is well known that active particles in a ratchet potential generate macroscopic currents. Based on a canonical model of dry active matter, we show that these currents produce generic long-range interactions between passive bodies immersed in an active fluid. Using multipole expansions, the anisotropy and power-law behaviours of the interactions are characterised in the far-field limit. We also identify interesting pairwise dynamics of passive bodies arising from the interactions, illustrated by the spontaneous rotation of non-chiral bodies and the formation of traveling bound pairs. The occurrence of these phenomena depends on tuneable properties of the bodies, thus opening new possibilities for self-assembly mediated by active fluids.
