Abstract
This talk shows how the electronic specific heat measurements of John Loram at Cambridge led the field of high-Tc superconductivity, anticipating, often years ahead of other studies, many key results which at the time were not widely accepted and often vehemently opposed but eventually came to be mainstream understanding. The links between specific heat and ARPES , Raman, infrared, tunnelling, muon spin relaxation, magnetisation, transport and critical currents will be outlined along with insights into the competition between superconductivity and the enigmatic pseudogap which have now become accepted. Central results from the electronic specific heat which remain to be accepted will also be discussed β they too are likely to eventually become generally established. The broad, wide-ranging sweep of these insights is a testament to both John Loramβs astonishing experimental technique and his interpretive genius.
