Abstract
Antibiotic drugs radically changed the world, not least because of the way they have changed our expectations about lifespan (both on average, and by dramatically cutting death rates at younger ages). Perhaps the only recent discoveries of equal magnitude are electricity, refrigeration, and telecommunications. Dr Christie presents his engaging account of how the antibiotic age began.
