DESCRIPTION:Openness can be used strategically to alter the status quo\, d
isrupt ecosystems and technology incumbents\, but there are questions as t
o the effectiveness\, extent\, timing and impact of open strategies. This
session will look into how open technologies have changed ecosystems drawi
ng on case studies in several sectors and also examine how emerging techno
logies such as the blockchain can themselves change modes and strategies f
or openness. \n \nReadings and links to the online papers and group annota
tions will be distributed by email\, please contact synbio@hermes.cam.ac.u
k to sign up for the whole series or individual sessions.\nIt is strongly
recommended that papers are read in advance of the meetings.\n \nABOUT:\nT
he guiding question of our research group will be the extent to which open
technologies result in equitable sharing of knowledge and cognitive or te
chnology justice. 'Open' IP describes a range of approaches to knowledge p
roduction\, distribution and consumption that allow more or different acto
rs to participate in producing and benefit from technologies. The global s
hift to knowledge-based economies and increasingly rapid pace of technolog
ical advancement means that the question of how society deals with intelle
ctual property (IP) and structures institutions and communities to manage
and disseminate knowledge is critically important to our future. Our choic
es will reflect and shape our societal values\, practices and culture. Adv
ocates of open and collaborative approaches point to evidence of real soci
al impact from but there is little published evidence and any effects are
 heavily context dependent.
