DESCRIPTION:A Hecke algebra H is an important tool in representation theor
y of group algebras kG. Many different objects are called Hecke algebras\,
but they are often endomorphism algebras of some kG module V\, and so all
ow you to study representations of the group G by looking at V as an H-kG
bimodule. In this talk\, I will give an overview of some of the ways to de
fine Hecke algebras. I'll then discuss how well they apply to certain infi
nite groups given by actions on trees. This will consider a couple of gene
ralizations of Serre's groups of tree automorphisms that involve almost au
tomorphisms in the style of Thompson's group V.\nThis talk is work in prog
ress and aims to explain the classical theory clearly rather than present
 new results.
