DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*\n\nThe process through which Louisiana Creole peopl
e in New Orleans were compelled to imagine themselves\, and their communit
y\, as “American\,” involved the imposition of an ethno-linguistic\, a
nd racial\, social order. That social order\, above all else\, posited Eng
lish as a Herrenvolk tongue\, marginalizing Louisiana Créolophones as non
-white\, and compelling white Creoles to abandon French in return for the
promise of upward mobility.\n\n*About the speaker*\n\nDarryl G Barthe Jr i
 s a Louisiana Creole of métis (Mi’kmaq\, Caddo\, Chitimacha)\, Cajun\,
and African American heritage. An historian\, he received his MA from the

ghton. He is currently a lecturer in American Studies at the Universiteit
 van Amsterdam.
