DESCRIPTION:2008 is the UN International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE).  It 
 offers an opportunity to review something of how modern developments have 
 revealed how the planet 'works' and how it has interacted with the evoluti
 on of life for most of the its history.  Earth has not been continuously h
 ospitable and the so-called 'mass extinctions' continue to provide fascina
 ting geological and biological questions.\n\nUnderstanding the past better
  ought to direct our attention to the unique problems of the current situa
 tion. From knowledge can come concern and hopefully IYPE can to inspire us
  to cherish our beautiful planet and learn not to take it for granted.
