SUMMARY:Tracking neurobiological factors of language developmental difficu
lties - Dr. Gesa Schaadt\, Research Scientist (Post-Doc) at the Clinic of
 Cognitive Neurology\, Medical Faculty\, University Leipzig\, Germany and t
he Department of Neurology\, Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and
 Brain Sciences\, Leipzig

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will provide an overview of our studies on ph
onological processing difficulties\, both at cortical and brainstem levels
\, in impaired language development. I will show how these processing diff
iculties are influenced by genetic predispositions and discuss underlying
brain structures. The consistent observation that boys seem to be at highe
r risk of impaired language development than girls suggests sex hormone co
ncentration to also play an important role in language outcome. In line wi
th this idea\, I will present our research on the impact of sex hormone co
ncentration on language development during mini-puberty\, that is a period
of elevated sex hormone concentration during the first six months of life
\, when also language-relevant brain areas undergo massive developmental c
 hanges.
