DESCRIPTION:The International Polar Year\, which began in March 2007\, wil
 l see a concerted international scientific effort focussed on the polar re
 gions. This talk will explain the background to some of the projects plann
 ed for the Arctic\, where the dramatic effects of climate change and incre
 asing pollution have already become apparent. See www.ipy.org for more inf
 ormation.\n\nProfessor Elizabeth Morris is a Senior Associate at the Scott
  Polar Research Institute\, Cambridge University\, and is a Visiting Profe
 ssor at the Earth Systems Science Centre\, Reading University. Her researc
 h has included mathematical modelling of physical processes in snow\, exte
 nsive fieldwork in alpine and polar regions\, and experimental laboratory 
 studies on ice and snow. She is now part of a consortium working on calibr
 ation and validation for the CryoSat satellite.\n\nThis event is free and
