DESCRIPTION:In the quest for drag reduction\, superhydrophobic surfaces ha
ve recently attracted a growing interest. These superhydrophobic surfaces
are rough surfaces that have the ability to entrap pockets of gas on the s
urface\, essentially allowing the overlying flow to slip over the surface\
, resulting in a drag reduction. This talk will discuss the common drag re
duction mechanism that allows surfaces (e.g. superhydrophobic surfaces\, r
iblets\, permeable media) to reduce drag in turbulent flows\, and how drag
reduction can be explained by a simple model. Then we will focus on isola
ting the effects that slip and roughness have on the overlying turbulence
 of superhydrophobic surfaces.
