DESCRIPTION:*Going to the Ends of the Earth as a Woman in Science*\n\n*Pro
 fessor Dame Jane Francis* is a geologist by training\, specialising in the
  reconstruction of environments on Earth millions of years ago. \n\nHer re
 search interests include ancient climates and fossil plants\, particularly
  of the polar regions\, the regions on Earth most sensitive to climate cha
 nge. Her research has led to many adventures in the awesome polar landscap
 es of the Arctic and Antarctica.\n\nJane was  Dean of the Faculty of Envir
 onment at the University of Leeds\, is currently the first woman Director 
 of the British Antarctic Survey\, and is involved in the organisation of t
 he international Antarctic Treaty. \n\nShe was awarded the Polar Medal in 
 2002 in recognition of her contribution to British polar research and in 2
 017 was made Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George for h
 er role in polar diplomacy. \n\nJane will talk about her life and work as 
 a woman in science\, both the triumphs and the challenges.\n\n*This event
