DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades large galaxy evolution-focused surve
ys\n(such as SDSS\, 2dfGRS\, GAMA) have unequivocally changed our view of
 the\nlocal Universe in terms of large-scale structure\, the astrophysical\
nprocesses occurring within galaxies and the effect of environment on gala
xy\nproperties. However\, it is not the processes occurring today which fo
rged\nthe z ~ 0 Universe\, but the factors which drove galaxy evolution an
d structure\nformation over the proceeding 12 billion years. \n\nAt inter
 mediate redshifts (0.3 < z < 1.0 - the last 3-8 billion years) many of\nth
ese local relations were forged: roughly half of all stars were born\,\nga
laxies underwent significant mass\, size and morphology evolution\,\nenvir
onmental trends evolved dramatically and Lambda-CDM predicts a strong\nand
testable evolution of the halo mass function. However\, this key epoch in
\nthe formation of the z~0 Universe has been left largely unexplored due t
o\nthe lack of the high completeness spectroscopic samples required to bot
h\ndetermine structure on sub-Mpc scales (groups/pairs/mergers) and to rem
ove\ncomplex selection biases when forming a spectroscopic sample.\n\nHere
I introduce the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS\n- devi
lsurvey.org) a new large program with the Anglo\nAustralian Telescope\, wh
 ich will probe ~ 60\,000 galaxies to Y-mag < 21.2 over\n~6deg^2 all with
exisiting/upcoming extensive multi-wavelength data from\nx-ray to low freq
uency radio. Uniquely\, DEVILS will reach the high levels of\ncompleteness
(>90%) previously only obtainable in the local Universe (i.e.\nGAMA/SDSS)
allowing us to directly relate the evolution of galaxy properties\nwith t
he multi-scale environment in which they reside. DEVILS will also\nconstru
ct the first robust and complete (to 10^13Msun) group catalogue to\nz~0.8\
, providing a stringent constraints of the evolution of the high mass\nend
of the halo mass function\; a strong test for Lambda-CDM.\n\nFinally\, I
will discuss future prospects with ESO-4MOST’s Wide Area VISTA\nExtragal
actic Survey Deep (WAVES-deep - wavesurvey.org)\nwhich\, in the next deca
de\, will probe to a similar depths as DEVILS but\ncover 15 times the area
 \; targeting ~1 million galaxies at 0.2 < z < 1.0.
