DESCRIPTION:Today\, uncertainty quantification (UQ) is a popular research
area that combines applied mathematics\, numerical analysis\, probability\
, statistics and applications. UQ is a broad phrase that encompasses metho
ds for taking account of uncertainties that arise when we use mathematical
and computer models to simulate real-world phenomena and make predictions
. The models we learn about as undergraduates are simplifications of real
world processes and\, even if we were able to solve them exactly\, we rare
ly have access to all the inputs required in practice. In this talk I will
discuss a few key challenges in UQ from the perspective of a numerical an
 alyst.
