DESCRIPTION:Sequencing of DNA is becoming routine in both research and cli
nical settings\, and offers the potential to transform medicine across the
world. Current DNA sequencing technologies have inherent shortcomings whi
ch result in the loss of important information and so limit their applicat
ions. To overcome these difficulties\, new technologies are needed which c
an directly read single molecules of DNA and provide information beyond th
e four base pairs. This presents a formidable sensing challenge which a nu
mber of techniques have attempted to address\, with varying degrees of suc
cess. \n\nThis talk will give an overview of the challenges involved in se
quencing single molecules of DNA and the approaches being taken to tackle
them\, and will present details of Base4's unique sequencing technology an
d how it allows some of these challenges to be avoided.
