DESCRIPTION:"We live in a stratified world\; the density of the ocean incr
eases with depth while that of the atmosphere decreases with height. Our r
esearch focuses on both fundamental and applied studies of stratified flui
ds\, with particular consideration to ocean environments. Here\, we presen
t the latest results from two ongoing \nexperiments. The first concerns th
e generation of internal waves by ocean ridges\, and uses the latest exper
imental techniques to study dynamics at the \nLuzon Strait\, which is the
origin of some of the largest internal waves ever observed. The second con
cerns a remarkable new mechanism we have discovered \nfor spontaneously pr
 opelling objects in stratified environments."
