DESCRIPTION:Astronomers depend on light for their understanding of the cos
mos beyond the confines of the Solar System. Many of the most exciting dis
coveries over the last couple of decades were made possible by new generat
ions of cameras and telescopes\, both on the ground and in space. The resu
lting observations captured the imagination not just of the scientists but
also of the general public. Dr Crawford will discuss the new facilities a
nticipated coming online over the next ten years or so - how they’ll not
only change our view of the Universe\, but also alter the way we do Astro
nomy. \n\nCarolin Crawford is the Public Astronomer at the Institute of As
tronomy at the University of Cambridge. She received her PhD from Cambridg
 e University\, and for many years she used X-ray\, optical\, and near-infr
ared observations to investigate both the environments of some of the larg
est galaxies in the Universe. Her research was carried out alongside — a
nd later eclipsed by — a growing role in the public communication of sci
ence. Carolin now gives many talks every year communicating the excitement
of astronomy to as wide an audience as possible\; she also makes regular
appearances on local and national radio. Her efforts were recognized by a
Woman of Outstanding Achievement award from the UK Resource Centre for Wom
en in Science\, Engineering and Technology for “communication of SET wit
h a contribution to society” in 2009\, and her appointment as the Profes
sor of Astronomy at Gresham College 2011– 2015. Carolin is also a Colleg
e Lecturer\, Fellow\, and Admissions Tutor at Emmanuel College where she t
 eaches mathematics.
