DESCRIPTION:Animal and cellular models are extensively used to understand
biological processes.\nHowever\, most of these models are inadequate in re
creating human tissues\, hampering the\ntranslation of knowledge we get fr
om them. Organoids are a novel in vitro system generated\nfrom human prima
ry tissues and recapitulating their architecture and cellular composition.
\nMiniguts (enteric organoids) are 3D cell clusters generated from gut tis
sue showing similar\ncharacteristics and function to the gut. In this mast
erclass\, we will give an overview of\norganoids and how this system can b
e used to study human intestinal diseases from noninfectious \nand infecti
ous origin. Specifically\, utilizing human miniguts we study the role of\n
Interleukin-22 and the microbiota in the pathogenesis of IBD. We also use
mouse miniguts to\nunderstand early interactions of the intestinal epithel
ia with whipworms\, which are parasitic\nworms causing Trichuriasis\, a ne
 glected tropical disease.
