 y fluent in them\, this talk might be trivial to you). Throughout the phys
 ics curriculum\, one is somehow expected to master the all-important conce
 pt of symmetry. But to many students (myself included)\, it is still an el
 usive idea that is\, at best\, understood on a case-by-case basis. I will 
 do my best to give a transparent and coherent account of symmetries and co
 nserved quantities in mechanics and field theory\, both classical and quan
 tum\, in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian frameworks. I cannot hope to prese
 nt "the full picture" but rather a simple\, solid basis for understanding.
