DESCRIPTION:Skills Talk: Techniques for significant software engineering t
asks\, Simon Fothergill\n\nUML How-To\, ways to help verify your program d
oes what it should and code generation/type-setting\n\nResearch Talk: Part
icle Filters for Inertial Navigation\, Oliver Woodman\n\nInertial measurem
ent units offer the opportunity for mobile devices to estimate their physi
cal state independently. Recent advances in MEMS technologies have\nmade s
uch units smaller and cheaper\, but also more prone\nto error.\n\nParticle
filters can be used to model the uncertainty which arises in inertial sys
tems\, as well as reducing the total error incurred through the fusion of
additional measurements and the use of domain specific constraints.\n\nThi
s talk will present a generic particle filter framework for inertial navig
ation. The framework is tested by applying it to the problem of pedestrian
tracking\, using a foot mounted inertial measurement unit.
