DESCRIPTION:This is part of the short course 'Quantum Computing - Theory a
 nd Practice'\, "http://talks.cam.ac.uk/show/index/86491":http://talks.cam.
ac.uk/show/index/86491\n\nThis course covers fundamental theoretical conce
pts of quantum computation and quantum information will be covered. In add
ition\, hands-on experimentation of quantum algorithms will be demonstrate
d on actual quantum devices. Special consideration will be given to realiz
ation of limitations of current\, non-fault tolerant quantum systems\, as
well as means to mitigate them when possible.\n\nSpecifically\, lecture 1
 covers:\na. Introduction and overview - historical review\, quantum bits\,
  quantum computation\, quantum algorithms\, quantum information\, models o
 f computation\, complexity analysis\nb. Algebraic preliminaries - Pauli ma
trices\, adjoint\, Hermitians and unitary operators\, tensor product space
 s\, commutative and anti-commutative relations\nc. Brief introduction to q
uantum mechanics - the postulates of quantum mechanics (state space\, evol
ution\, quantum measurement and composite systems) \n\nThere will be a 15
minute break in the middle of the lecture.\n\nIt is useful for students to
have a laptop/tablet (or even a smartphone) for some of the more practica
l examples\, but this is not necessary. Those without computer access can
follow a demo shown by the instructor.
