DESCRIPTION:When we press FIRE on the most powerful laser in the world\, w
e deliver a packet of light that is a thousand billion billion times more
intense than the sunlight you feel while out on the beach in peak summer.
 But these machines aren't just a physicist's playground - they’re being
put to task. From igniting a miniature star on Earth to keep our power sta
tions working for thousands of years with clean fuel\, to powering innovat
ive next generation micro-accelerator technology for detecting and treatin
g cancer or x-ray imaging a jet engine at full speed for performance inspe
ction. Not bad for a fancy form of light.\n \nDr Ceri Brenner is a senior
application development physicist at the Science and Technology Facilities
Council’s Central Laser Facility. She specialises in using the most pow
erful lasers in the world to develop innovative imaging and inspection tec
hnology for use in medical diagnosis\, nuclear waste management and aerosp
ace performance testing. Ceri has a unique role that spans research\, inno
vation and business development and is driving the translation of laser-dr
iven accelerator research into industrial applications that impact our soc
iety. In 2017 she was awarded the UK Institute of Physics’ Clifford-Pate
rson Medal and Prize for her significant early career contributions to the
application of physics in an industrial context.\n
