DESCRIPTION:A key societal challenge of our century is to secure and harne
ss environmentally sustainable energy supplies. An attractive\napproach to
this issue is the production of 'solar fuels' through a process known as
artificial photosynthesis. This technology is inspired by\nnatural photosy
nthesis and aims to use sunlight as the energy source to generate a renewa
ble fuel such as hydrogen or ‘green gasoline’\nfrom water and the gree
nhouse gas carbon dioxide. Solar fuel synthesis thereby addresses importan
t elements of the current energy\nchallenge such as sustainability\, secur
ity of supply and energy storage. This lecture will give an overview of th
e prospects of artificial\nphotosynthesis and discuss some of the many fun
damental science and engineering approaches that are currently being pursu
ed on the\nroad to a fossil-fuel free economy.
