DESCRIPTION:We investigate randomized benchmarking in a general setting wi
th\nquantum gates that form a representation\, not necessarily an irreduci
ble one\, of a finite\ngroup. We derive an estimate for the average fideli
ty\, to which experimental data may\nthen be calibrated. The number of par
ameters that we need to fit is closely related to the structure of quantum
channels that are covariant w.r.t. the representation at hand. Therefore\
, we also discuss how results on the structure of covariant channels can b
e used to improve randomized benchmarking protocols. \nFurthermore\, we es
tablish that randomized benchmarking can be\nachieved by the sole implemen
tation of quantum gates that generate the group as well\nas one additional
arbitrary group element if the quantum channel that describes the noise w
as close to a covariant channel. The efficiency of this protocol depends o
n mixing times of random walks on the group and we also briefly discuss ho
w new results in this direction could improve our protocol.\n\n
