DESCRIPTION:2018 marks the centenary of the establishment of the Armenian
Republic\, recognised first by the\nOttoman Empire in May 1918. Over the c
ourse of the last century Armenia has been on a challenging\npath towards
independence\, while Turkey was on the equally difficult quest to establis
h a secular\,\ndemocratic state. In 1991\, once Armenia declared its indep
endence from the Soviet Union\, Turkey\nonce again was among the first to
recognise the country. Yet\, for a number of reasons\, Turkey refused\nto
establish diplomatic relations with its new neighbour\, in part because of
its unwillingness to\nrecognise the Armenian Genocide. The issue was comp
licated further when Turkey sealed its border\nwith Armenia in response to
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 1993.\nSi
nce then the border has remained closed and the relations between the two
states have reached a\ndeadlock.\n\nAs Armenia prepares to celebrate hundr
ed years of its first republic\, what are the prospects for the\nrelations
between the two states a century on? The sealed border continues to have
a significant\neconomic\, political and social impact on the people of Tur
key and Armenia. However\, attempts have\nbeen made by both countries to r
esolve differences despite the political stalemate.\n\nThe forum\, hosted
by the European Centre @ POLIS\, will seek to address these issues of disc
ord and\ncooperation between the two countries\, aiming to answer the foll
owing questions:\n\n• What is the potential for the normalisation of Arm
enian-Turkish relations?\n• What are the constraints that prevent the tw
o states from opening the border and\nestablishing diplomatic relations?\n
 • How are the relations between Armenia and Turkey affected by Russia an
d the European\nUnion?\n• And are there any possibilities for regional c
ooperation whether at economic\, social or\npolitical levels?\n\nThe forum
will be chaired by Dr Geoffrey Edwards\, deputy director of the European
Centre @ POLIS\,\nSenior Fellow and Emeritus Reader in European Studies.\n
\nSpeakers:\n\n•Dr Ayşe Zarakol\, Reader in International Relations at
POLIS and Fellow at Emmanuel College\n\n•Thomas de Waal\, Senior fellow
with Carnegie Europe\n\n•Prof William Hale\, Emeritus Professor of Polit
ics with Special Reference to Turkey\, SOAS University.\n\nRefreshments wi
ll be served before 4.30pm and the event will be followed by a wine recept
ion in the\nARB foyer. For more information please email Lusi at lm761@cam
