DESCRIPTION:Cuprate high-temperature superconductors have matured to the e
xtent that many applications are now possible and indeed are currently bei
ng rolled out. In our Institute these include MRI\, NMR\, flux pumps\, rot
 ating machinery\, transformers\, and next-generation aerospace propulsion.
Key to these applications is wire performance as governed by critical cur
rent density\, Jc. By studying over 100 data sets for every class\, type
and symmetry of superconductor we show that Jc in self-field is actually a
thermodynamic parameter\, independent of the pinning commonly believed to
underlie its behaviour and governed only by the superfluid density. We re
port a new critical state in the Meissner state and confirm this through m
easurements of current and field distribution across practical conductors.
