DESCRIPTION:The classical (Spitzer-Chandrasekhar) theory of cluster relaxa
tion is\nunsatisfactory because it involves the Coulomb logarithm and comp
 letely\nneglects the cluster's self-gravity. A modern alternative is the\n
Balescu-Lenard (BL) equation\, which has no such ill-defined parameter and
\nincludes self-gravity. The BL equation has recently explained the secul
ar\nevolution of collisionless stellar discs. In this talk I will review
the\nclassical theory and demonstrate its pitfalls\, showing at each stage
why the\nBL equation does a better job. I will then present the first ap
plication of\nthe BL formalism to spherical systems. I will show how the
BL flux through\naction space differs from the corresponding classical flu
x\, and discuss what\na complete theory of cluster relaxation might entail
