DESCRIPTION:Proneural proteins are transcription factors that occupy the h
ighest position in the genetic network that drives sense organ formation.
One of the central questions in the field is how the identity of the pr
oneural protein is linked to aspects of terminal differentiation. In orde
r to address this issue\, a method combining fluorescent activated cell s
orting and gene expression microarrays was developed and used to identify
the transcriptional profiles of sense organ precursors and their progeny
. Interestingly\, among the genes we identified there is a group of diffe
rentiation genes\, raising the possibility that proneural proteins direct
ly control aspects of terminal differentiation. Another finding was the p
ossible involvement in sense organ formation of a microRNA gene.
