DESCRIPTION:Whose job is it to ensure that we lead a healthy life?  Who sh
 ould help us not to eat or drink to much\, to take exercise\, and to prote
 ct our chlidren and ourselves against disease?  Is it entirely up to us as
  individuals or does the state also have a role to play?  Two typical\, co
 ntradictory\, responses are "We don't want the nanny state interfering wit
 h our lives" and "It's about time the Government did something".  I will d
 iscuss an ethical framework for considering such questions and explore the
  interplay between scientific evidence\, ethics and politics in deciding h
 ow to respond to the challenge of public health.
