DESCRIPTION:Canopies are pervasive in the environment\, whether it be fore
 sts\, crops or\nclusters of buildings. However\, numerous fundamental ques
 tions regarding\nthe characteristics of flows inside and over canopies sti
 ll remain unanswered.\nUnderstanding these flows would have applications i
 n energy harvesting\,\nincreasing mixing and heat transfer\, or even reduc
 ing crop losses due to\nwind damage. In this presentation\, we explore if 
 canopy properties can be\ntuned to exploit the flow over them. First\, we 
 will use simple models for flows\nthrough canopies to explore the effect o
 f canopy properties on the formation\nof Kelvin-Helmholtz-like instabiliti
 es over them. These models reveal some\noptimum canopies which result in t
 he formation of strong instabilities. As\nwe increase the sparsity of the 
 canopy\, the simplified models fail to capture\nthe flow within it. For th
 is regime\, we will present the results obtained from\nDirect Numerical Si
 mulations of the flow.
