DESCRIPTION:"FairTrade cocaine" is a development education project that's
been launched\nin Cambridge. We run and design workshops and presentations
about the\ncocaine supply chain\, in particular looking at Favela life an
d the teenage\ndrug gangs of Rio.\n\n"Drugs are bad for you\, so don't tak
e them." Young people have been fed\nthis message for years\, with largely
disappointing results. But there is a\nmore important\, global message wh
en it comes to drugs\, one which is rarely\nheard by young people (or inde
ed adults) in this country. It goes something\nlike: "When you take cocain
e in Britain\, you're actually killing child\nsoldiers in the drug armies
of South American slums." We believe this is a\npowerful\, ethical message
\, reinforced by recent films such as City of God\,\nMaria Full of Grace a
nd Favela Rising. It is a message we would like to\nspread. There is no "F
airTrade" cocaine.\n\nIf you would like to get involved\, come at 7.45pm t
o the film or\npresentation afterwards. We already collaborate and run you
th workshops\nwith Harambee\, a local Cambridge based youth development ch
arity.\n\nOne night in a favela\, an impoverished barrio on the outskirts
of Rio de\nJaneiro\, an infamous druglord shot and killed four policemen\,
launching\nwhat the favela residents refer to as "The Massacre": in retal
 iation\, the\nmilitary police\, known for their oppressive corruption\, ma
de a sadistic\nsurprise attack on the community and slaughtered 21 of its
innocent\ncitizens. Short-listed for an Academy Award in 2005 for Best Doc
umentary\,\nFavela Rising focuses on Anderson Sá\, the brother of one of
the victims.\nInstead of seeking revenge by further entrenching himself in
drug\ntrafficking-often the only mode of survival for those living in the
\nfavelas-he began to wonder how to counteract this cycle of violence.
